In the midst of a hilly landscape, the high points of which are dominated by steep, craggy rocks, there is a mighty gnarled oak tree, the crown of which oak tree, whose crown spans the underlying scene like an umbrella. At the foot of the oak is a riverbed, the contents of which are marked by bright highlights. On the opposite bank of the oak a deliciously rendered group of figures, whose elegant back figure of a woman introduces the scene. From the eye wanders over two hunting dogs with a boy looking after them, over a horse with a farmhand behind a horse with a servant standing behind it to the right to a man with a rifle and a wide-brimmed hat with a red plume. In the bend of the rural building with a well next to it, a railing seems to be coming from the other side. This and the smoke rising from the chimney leads into the hilly background, which is painted in light perspective, the highest point of which is surmounted by a fortress. Hondius was probably never in Italy himself, but in his paintings he liked to draw inspiration for his paintings from the hilly landscapes there. The composition and especially the extremely elegant horse on the right and the staffage figures are typical of Hondius, who lived mainly in Rotterdam and - after our painting was painted - in London. Compositionally our painting is close to a smaller picture (83,2 x 68,6 cm), which was sold on 11 December 1996 at Sotheby's, London as lot 289. Here too a single tree dominates a wide landscape with an architectural backdrop and here, too, a figural staffage can be seen inverted. A painting dated 1654 and signed by Hondius shows, as in our painting, a horse with and rider set diagonally in the picture plane, whose wide-brimmed hat also shows coloured feathers. This painting is known to come from the Keith Rous Collection, Worstead House.

Inmitten einer hügeligen Landschaft, deren Höhepunkte von schroffem steil emporragenden Fels markiert wird steht eine mächtige knorrige Eiche, deren Krone das darunterliegende Geschehen schirmartig überspannt. Am Fuße der Eiche zeichnet sich ein Flussbett ab, dessen Inhalt durch helle Glanzpunkte markiert ist. Am gegenüberliegenden Ufer der Eiche eine köstlich wiedergegebene Figurengruppe, deren elegante Rückenfigur einer Frau einleitet. Von ihr aus wandert das Auge über zwei Jagdhunde mit einem sich um diese kümmernden Jungen über ein Pferd mit dahinter stehendem Knecht nach rechts zu einem Mann mit Gewehr und weitkrempigem Hut mit rotem Federbusch. In der Biegung des Flusses auf einer Anhöhe ein rurales Gebäude mit danebenstehendem Brunnen, ein Geländer scheint auf der anderen Seite herabzuführen. Dieses und der Rauch, der dem Schornstein entsteigt leitet in den Hügeligen weiten in Lichtperspektive wiedergegebenen Hintergrund über, dessen höchster Punkt von einer Festung übersteigert wird. Vermutlich war Hondius selbst nie in Italien, jedoch hat er sich in seinen Gemälden gern von den dortigen hügeligen Landschaften inspirieren lassen. Komposition und vor allem auch das rechte überaus elegante Pferd und die Staffagefiguren sind typisch für Hondius, der vorwiegend in Rotterdam und – nach der Enstehung unseres Gemäldes- in London wirkte. Kompositionell steht unser Gemälde einem kleineren Bild (83,2 x 68,6 cm) nahe, das am 11. Dezember 1996 bei Sotheby’s, London unter Lot 289 angeboten worden ist. Auch hier dominiert ein einzelner Baum eine weite Landschaft mit Architekturstaffage und auch hier ist seitenverkehrt eine Figurenstaffage zu erkennen. Ein 1654 datiertes und von Hondius signiertes Gemälde zeigt wie auf unserem Gemälde ein diagonal in die Bildfläche gesetztes Pferd mit Reiter, dessen breitkrempiger Hut ebenfalls farbige Federn zeigt. Dieses Gemälde stammt bekanntlich aus der Sammlung Keith Rous, Worstead House.
