During his time at the Académie Suisse, Guillaumin became friends with Paul Cézanne and Camille Pissarro with whom he not only enjoyed a lifelong friendship but also had a considerable influence on their work. In 1886 he also became friends with Vincent van Gogh, whose brother Theo exhibited and sold some of his works. His workshop was visited by many young artists such as Paul Gauguin, Paul Signac and Georges Seurat. In Paris, he had many solo exhibitions, for example in 1895 at the Galeries Durand-Ruel, in 1897 at the Galerie Ambroise Vollard, in 1901 and 1906 at the Galerie Bernheim - Jeune and in 1908 at the Galerie Paul Rosenberg. This period also saw the creation of our painting, which is estimated by the Comité Guillaumin to have been painted between 1900 and 1905. Many of his works are in museum collections, the Musée d'Orsay alone lists 48 works, the Petit Palais 91 works, but also outside France most important museums of modern art boast of having a Guillaumin in their collection.
