Today, Bonnat is primarily known to us for his impressive portraits, which followed a phase predominantly focused on religious motifs. He drew inspiration from Diego Velázquez and the Spanish realists, whom he was able to study during his apprenticeship in Madrid, and whose spirit now manifests in his depictions of well-known figures like Victor Hugo, Louis Pasteur, and Ingres. Today, we are aware of approximately 200 portraits by him, including the "Portrait de jeune fille" from 1865, which is currently held in the Musée d'Orsay and originates from the collection of Mme Jacques – Edouard Kann. Our portrait offers echoes of symbolism beyond realism, lending it an almost hypnotic character, despite being a profile portrait. While Bonnat first served as a professor and then director of the École des Beaux-Arts, and taught notable artists such as Gustave Caillebotte and Henri de Touleouse-Lautrec, he developed a workshop that remained productive for over three decades and amassed a significant art collection, now incorporated into the Musée Bonnat-Helleu in Bayonne.

Heute ist Bonnat uns vorwiegend aufgrund seiner eindrucksvollen Portraits bekannt, die sich einer Werkphase vorwiegend religiöser Motive anschlossen. Er ließ sich von Diego Velázquez und den spanischen Realisten inspirieren, die er während seiner Lehrzeit in Madrid studieren konnte und deren Geist sich nun in seinen Darstellungen bekannter Persönlichkeiten wie Victor Hugo, Louis Pasteur und Ingres niederschlug. Insgesamt sind uns heute von ihm ca. 200 Portraits bekannt, so etwa das „Portrait de jeune fille“ von 1865, das heute im Musée d’Orsay verwahrt wird und aus der Sammlung Mme Jacques – Edouard Kann stammt. Unser Portrait bietet über den Realismus hinaus Anklänge des Symbolismus, die dem Portrait einen geradezu hypnotischen Charakter verleihen, obwohl es sich um ein Profilbildnis handelt. Während Bonnat erst Professor und dann Direktor der École des Beaux – Arts und Professor etwa von Gustave Caillebotte und Henri de Touleouse – Lautrec war, entwickelte er eine Werkstatt, die über drei Jahrzehnte produktiv war und trug eine beachtliche Kunstsammlung zusammen, die heute im Musée Bonnat - Helleu in Bayonne eingegliedert ist.
